Chris Offutt è nato a Lexington, Kentucky. Oltre a Nelle terre di nessuno, ha scritto un’altra raccolta di racconti, Out of the Woods, un romanzo, The Good Brother, e tre memoir: The Same River Twice, No Heroes: A Memoir of Coming Home, e My Father, the Pornographer. Ha ricevuto, nel 1996, il Whiting Award per la narrativa e la saggistica, ed è stato incluso da Granta tra i venti migliori narratori delle ultime generazioni.
